Yes, I live in New York City – a beer mecca in and of its self, for both our access to knowledgeable beer establishments and our phenomenal NY State craft brews (but that’s a whole other entry!!) – I thought I should also pay homage to my roots on this blog. A born and bred Michigander, I’ve always sung the praises of beers from the Mitten. On every trip home, my dad and I hit up the local “party store,” Good Time Party Store on 7 Mile, which has a darn good selection for a hometown shop. On my trip home for the holidays, I sipped the following. It’s a long list, but it’s a long holiday season!
Dark Horse Brewing Bourbon Barrel Aged Plead the 5th: Caramel, bourbon, deliciousness, smoky but a savory smoke not campy smoke. Almost too easy to drink for such a high ABV
Dark Horse Brewing 4 Elf Winter Warmer: Smooth, crisp and spicy – clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, berries, allsipce, anise.
Short’s Brewing Cup A Joe Coffee Crème Stout: Smelled roasty, malty and chocolaty, was hoping for some nice coffee bitterness from this, but it’s too sweet for me.
Short’s Brewing Good Humans: Excellent balance of bitterness with sweet caramel notes and a tiny hint of hops.
Odd Side Ales Sinister Vertigo Imperial Stout: Thick, stout-y with a clean finish, smells much sweeter than it is.
Odd Side Ales Chocolade Koffie Stout: A bit bitter at the end, but in a dark chocolate sort of way that I really enjoy!
Short’s Brewing Company Empress Catherine: Bitter… Not smooth at all. A hint of smoke
Odd Side Ales Bean Flicker Blonde: A deliciously drinkable blonde coffee ale. Smooth, rich and roasty
Odd Side Ales Java Chip Mint Stout: Was skeptical, but this is amazing. 2 favorites come together: thin mints and stout. Woah.
