Those of you who know me, know that, along with complex heavy and flavorful beer, I also love University of Michigan Football! And those of you who know University of Michigan football know that tomorrow is basically like Christmas for us. Okay, maybe more like Thanksgiving – there’s that game against the team down south next month, but it’s a big freakin’ deal of a game! The bar I frequent for game watches – Professor Thom’s – has an awesome selection of Michigan Craft brews on tap which makes game watching even sweeter!
So yeah, 3 hours of drinking complex heavy and flavorful beers in the middle of the day. I think we all know what would happen there… Luckily, the beer industry has a solution to such a conundrum, and it’s not watered down macro-brews. Behold: the “Sessionable” beer.
There are lots of theories as to where this name came from, but the thing to know is that beers that are labeled as “Session” are, by definition, under 5% ABV. The perfect answer to hours of sipping while cheering! Here, in no particular order, are some of my favorites for exactly this purpose:
Founders All Day IPA: Yep, an IPA I don’t hate. In large part due to the toasty malts that balance things out a bit. If I’m looking for something lighter with a hint of citrus, this is where I land!
Motor City Brewing Works Ghettoblaster: Light, smooth and roasty. Every flavor in this beer is light, making it entirely drinkable.
Wandering Star Brewing Mild at Heart: Smooth, light chocolate tones and nuttiness. Could sip this for hours!
Odd Side Ales Bean Flicker Blonde: A deliciously drinkable blonde coffee ale. Smooth, rich and roasty
Left Hand Brewing Good JuJu: If you need flavor while you session, the ginger notes here will do the trick! Subtle but delicious – bring it on!
